What happens after you quit smoking
Your body starts to recover soon after the last cigarette. The timeline below follows widely published guidance from health bodies such as the World Health Organization and the US CDC. Everyone is different, so treat it as a general guide, not a promise.
| Time smoke-free | What generally happens |
|---|---|
| 20 minutes | Heart rate and blood pressure start to drop |
| 12 hours | Carbon monoxide in the blood falls to normal levels |
| 2 weeks to 3 months | Circulation improves and lung function begins to increase |
| 1 to 9 months | Coughing and shortness of breath decrease |
| 1 year | The extra risk of coronary heart disease is about half that of a smoker |
| 5 to 15 years | Stroke risk falls toward that of a non-smoker |
| 10 years | The risk of dying from lung cancer is about half that of someone who still smokes |
| 15 years | Heart disease risk is close to that of a non-smoker |
If you have a health condition or take medication, talk to a doctor or pharmacist about quitting. They can also help with nicotine replacement or other treatments that make it easier.
Days since your last cigarette: why counting helps
Quitting is hard, and “I stopped a while ago” is easy to give up on. A number is different. Seeing day 30 become day 31 gives you something small to protect every single day. Many people find the first week and the first month the toughest, so those milestones are worth celebrating.
Some people also track the money they save. Multiply what you used to spend per day by your day since count and the total adds up quickly. If you spent $10 a day, 100 smoke-free days is $1,000 back in your pocket. Put that number somewhere you will see it.
If you slip
A slip does not erase your progress. Many people who quit for good had a few attempts first. If it happens, set a new quit date and start again. Your old count still taught you what your triggers were: a time of day, a place, a person or a feeling.
Free support helps. In the US you can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for a quitline in your state. Many other countries run their own free quitlines and apps, and your doctor can point you to them.
If you are counting another habit as well, the days sober calculator works the same way, and the days from today tool shows the date of your next big milestone.
