Days since January 1 this year
January 1 is day 1, so the number of full days that have passed since New Year’s Day is always one less than today’s day number. On January 1 itself, zero days have passed. On January 2 it is 1 day, and so on.
That small difference is why two websites can disagree by one. One counts the day number (inclusive of January 1), the other counts the days since (exclusive). Neither is wrong. How many days are left in the year?
Subtract today’s day number from the length of the year: 365 in a normal year, 366 in a leap year. The card above does that for you, counting the days after today up to and including December 31.
Note that “days left in the year” and “days until New Year” are one apart. December 31 is the last day of the year, while New Year’s Day is the day after. On December 30 there is 1 day left in the year but 2 days until New Year. For the live countdown to January 1, see the New Year page.
Leap years and day 366
A leap year adds February 29, so every date from March 1 onward gets a day number one higher than usual, and December 31 becomes day 366. Leap years come every four years, except century years that do not divide by 400. So 2000 and 2024 were leap years, 2100 will not be, and the next one is 2028.

What people use the day number for
- Planning: “we are on day 250 of 365” is a clear way to see how much of the year is left for goals and budgets.
- Project tracking: streaks and 100-day challenges are easier to follow by number than by date.
- Ordinal dates at work: food production, shipping and some software stamp the day number on labels and batch codes, sometimes written as YYYY-DDD, like 2026-292. People often call this a “Julian date”, but it is not the same as the astronomers’ Julian Day.

What day of the year is it today?
The live number is at the top of this page. It counts January 1 as day 1 and uses today’s date on your device, so it changes at your local midnight.
How many days are left in the year?
Subtract today’s day number from 365, or from 366 in a leap year. The card on this page shows the result for today.
Is this year a leap year?
2026 is not a leap year, so it has 365 days. The next leap year is 2028. Pick any date in the tool to check its year.
What is the 100th day of the year?
April 10 in a normal year and April 9 in a leap year.
What is a Julian date?
In business, “Julian date” usually means the day of the year, often written as the year plus a three-digit day number, such as 2026-292. Astronomers use a different Julian Day count that runs continuously from 4713 BC.
How many weeks are in a year?
52 weeks plus 1 day, or plus 2 days in a leap year. Under the ISO system some years have 53 numbered weeks, like 2026.
